Xi Jinping Highlights Importance of Basic Research for Innovation

Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the critical need to enhance the strategic, forward-looking, and systematic structure of basic research. His call aims to bolster innovation and support scientists and researchers in generating more original innovations.
In his recent directive regarding the operations of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Xi outlined the importance of foundational research in fostering technological advancements.
Xi acknowledged the significant contributions of the NSFC over the past forty years in promoting basic research and nurturing innovators. He urged the foundation to capitalize on the current wave of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation.
The President called for a more profound reform in the science funding system administered by the NSFC. His goal is to refine the funding framework and improve the efficiency of funding allocations.
Xi encouraged the NSFC to play a pivotal role in creating a robust research ecosystem and promoting international collaboration. This, he argued, would enable scientists and researchers to increase their output of original innovations.
Furthermore, he highlighted that such advancements are essential for achieving greater self-reliance and strength in the domains of science and technology.
The NSFC, which was established in February 1986, has evolved into a significant channel for national funding dedicated to basic research, playing a crucial role in China's innovation landscape.
