Tibetan Medicine Introduces First National Disease Coding Standard

China has officially unveiled the Tibetan Medicine Disease Classification and Code, which serves as a national standard for the categorization of diseases within Tibetan medicine.
Formulated by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and set to take effect on April 1, 2025, the standard represents the country's first national classification system for diseases in ethnic-minority medicine, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation.
Mima, the president of Xizang University of Tibetan Medicine and leader of the Tibetan medicine standardization working group, stated that the standards align with essential Tibetan medical theories and clinical diagnostic requirements.
The standards categorize diseases suitable for Tibetan medicine into 15 main categories and 97 subcategories.
A comprehensive terminology and coding table has been created, assigning unique codes and names to more than 3,000 diseases.
This signifies a pivotal advancement in the standardization of Tibetan medicine, playing a critical role in promoting the standardized and scientific development of Tibetan medical services, according to Mima.
