WIPO Chief Praises China's Role in IP Cooperation

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Daren Tang has praised China for its substantial contributions to the global intellectual property (IP) ecosystem. His recent remarks highlight the pivotal role China has taken in international IP partnerships.
In a recent interview with Chinese media in Beijing, Tang emphasized the swift increase in China's intellectual property applications, positioning the country as the largest filer of international patent applications worldwide. This growth is indicative of China's robust commitment to innovation.
According to WIPO's preliminary report on the Global Innovation Index 2024, China is home to 26 of the world's top 100 science and technology innovation clusters, maintaining its position as the global leader for two consecutive years. These clusters underscore China's dominance in technological advancements.
"I think this shows that China has paid a lot of attention to research and development, as well as scientific and industrial innovation," Tang said, noting that he believes this trend will continue. This focus reflects China's strategic vision for future growth.
China's pursuit of high-quality development will place a stronger emphasis on science, technology, and innovation, according to Tang. He highlighted that such advancements are essential for fostering a competitive edge in the global market.
Tang attended the opening ceremony of the third Belt and Road High-Level Conference on Intellectual Property in Beijing on September 11. He praised the conference for promoting international collaboration and the exchange of ideas among global participants.
Additionally, Tang commended the increasing involvement of Chinese companies in the WIPO GREEN program, where they contribute green technologies and provide essential support for sustainability initiatives.
"I think this way we can show the world that IP is not just to address local challenges and national challenges, but also global challenges," Tang said, emphasizing the importance of IP in addressing critical issues facing humanity.
