Norway Seeks to Boost Green Maritime Ties with China

Norway is actively seeking to enhance its green maritime collaboration with China, a partnership that promises to bring not only economic benefits but also significant progress in tackling global climate challenges. At the 2nd China-Norway Green Cooperation Seminar held in Oslo, officials underscored the shift towards sustainable practices in the maritime sector, highlighting innovations in green ships and emission control technologies.
During the seminar, themed "Sailing Together to a Greener Future," a diverse group of policymakers, industry leaders, and experts convened to discuss how the unique strengths of both nations could drive innovation and sustainability in maritime and related sectors. This optimism reflects a well-established cooperation that dates back years.
Norway's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries state secretary, Tronstad Sagebakken, remarked on the historical ties between the two nations, particularly in ocean-oriented industries like shipping and maritime technology. He noted that China represents Norway's largest trading partner in Asia, which is crucial for Norwegian shipowners and service providers.
Sagebakken emphasized, "If we are to solve the big challenges of our time and accelerate the green transition, we need to work together. Norwegian expertise in green shipping, paired with the capabilities of Chinese industry players, creates a valuable partnership." He reiterated Norway's commitment to ambitious climate objectives within its maritime sector.
Knut Arild Hareide, CEO of the Norwegian Shipowners' Association, highlighted the essential role of shipping in globalization and sustainable development. He expressed concern about the potential rise of geopolitical tensions and protectionism, while praising the strengthening of maritime relations between China and Norway.
In addition, Sidsel Norvik, director of Nor-Shipping, mentioned the inspiring innovations emerging from China, including wind-assisted propulsion and carbon capture. Many Chinese companies are showcasing their technological advancements at Nor-Shipping, which is renowned as one of the leading maritime trade fairs globally.
Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, chief operating officer of DNV Maritime, underscored the global necessity for collaboration in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 in shipping. She pointed out that China's leadership in shipbuilding positions it as a vital partner in this transition.
Brynjulv Standal, senior vice president for Kongsberg Maritime, stated that his company views itself as a long-term partner in the green transition, referencing its decades of collaboration with Chinese shipyards on innovations such as emission monitoring systems.
Jo Friedmann, senior vice president and lead shipping analyst at Rystad Energy, remarked on China's critical role in the global maritime transition, emphasizing the importance of shipbuilding capacity and innovation in this journey.
Earlier this year, China and Norway formalized their commitment to sustainable ocean management through a Memorandum of Understanding. The Chinese ambassador to Norway, Hou Yue, highlighted the synergy between the green and blue economies, showcasing the potential benefits of their cooperative efforts in renewable technologies and advanced manufacturing.
As these nations continue to forge stronger ties in sustainable practices, their collaboration could lead to significant advancements in both the shipping industry and the broader environmental landscape.
