China reaches 95% health insurance coverage in Five-Year Plan

China has reached a remarkable milestone, achieving a health insurance coverage rate of 95 percent during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, which spans from 2021 to 2025. This achievement reflects significant advancements in the country's healthcare system and an effort to enhance social policy. The National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) reported that as of 2024, approximately 1.327 billion individuals are enrolled in the national basic medical insurance program.

The NHSA, during a recent press conference, emphasized the continuing improvements to the insurance system that have contributed to this high coverage rate. Notably, the medical aid program subsidizes premiums for nearly 80 million individuals each year, ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to necessary health services.

In addition to this financial support, the in-patient expense reimbursement rates under the various insurance plans have remained competitive, with rates around 80 percent for employees and 70 percent for residents. These rates demonstrate a commitment to alleviating the financial burdens of medical expenses for citizens.

Another noteworthy development is the expansion of long-term care insurance trials, which now cover nearly 190 million people. This expansion shows a dedicated effort to address the aging population's needs and the increasing demand for long-term healthcare solutions.

By the end of 2024, the national pooled medical insurance fund reported a substantial cumulative balance of 3.86 trillion yuan, equivalent to approximately 539.1 billion US dollars. This financial strength provides a strong foundation for sustaining healthcare coverage and improving services in the future.

Furthermore, in an effort to ensure comprehensive treatment options, the NHSA has established a unified national drug catalog that lists 3,159 medicines covered by the health insurance plans. This move not only enhances access to necessary medications but also promises to improve health outcomes across the population.

Overall, China's achievement in reaching 95 percent health insurance coverage is a significant step towards ensuring that its citizens have access to necessary healthcare services. As the Five-Year Plan progresses, the government is poised to continue refining and enhancing its healthcare policies to meet the evolving needs of its populace.
