UNRWA Reports 391 Personnel Killed in Gaza Conflict 2023

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has reported a tragic toll of 391 personnel killed in the Gaza Strip since the onset of the renewed conflict in 2023. This alarming statistic highlights the profound dangers faced by those working in humanitarian efforts amidst escalating violence.

Among the deceased, 310 are recognized as UNRWA staff members, while the remaining 81 were personnel supporting its essential operations. These losses underscore the dire circumstances confronting relief efforts in the region.

In response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis, UNRWA has conducted over 16.7 million health consultations since October 2023. These consultations encompass a range of vital services, including vaccinations, medical check-ups, and counselling, aimed at alleviating the suffering of the affected population.

Currently, approximately 67,000 displaced persons are taking refuge in 83 emergency shelters managed by UNRWA. These facilities are crucial for providing temporary safety and aid to those who have lost their homes due to the conflict.

Despite proactive preparations, UNRWA has been hindered in its ability to establish new medical facilities in Beit Lahia, located in northern Gaza. This delay has been attributed to the expansion of the Israeli militarized zone of control as well as a deteriorating security environment, severely impacting humanitarian operations.

UNRWA's mandate involves delivering humanitarian assistance and protection to Palestine refugees in the Near East. This mission includes vital services such as education, healthcare, relief, and social support aimed at mitigating the impacts of conflict on vulnerable populations.
