China launches first open-pit mine with 5G-A network

The Yimin Open-Pit Coal Mine in Inner Mongolia has become the first globally to implement a 5G-A network specifically designed for unmanned electric trucks in mining operations. This significant milestone introduces a fleet of 100 unmanned electric mining trucks, marking a pivotal development in the field of mining technology.
The deployment at Yimin Mine signifies the initiation of large-scale 'vehicle-cloud-network' collaboration in open-pit mining, leveraging the capabilities of a 5G-A network. This advancement not only improves safety standards in the mining sector but also enhances productivity, thereby establishing a new benchmark for smart mining practices.
5G-A, or 5G-Advanced, is identified as an intermediate phase between current 5G networks and future 6G technologies. This network delivers enhanced speeds, minimal latency, and improved reliability over existing 5G infrastructure, enabling a wider range of applications such as extended reality and mobile cloud gaming.
In a remarkable move, the Yimin project is the first in China to eliminate driver cabins from its mining trucks. This innovative design aims to protect workers from hazardous environments, significantly reducing the inherent safety risks associated with traditional mining operations. However, this advancement necessitates sophisticated data processing and coordination systems, especially in challenging environmental conditions like blizzards and dust storms.
The unmanned electric trucks, each capable of carrying 90 tons, have demonstrated transport efficiency improvements exceeding 120 percent compared to manual operations, even when temperatures plummet to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Huawei Cloud's tailored solution enhances fleet coordination by providing real-time updates and optimizing transport routes through the use of crowdsourced data.
Zhang Ping'an, executive director of Huawei and CEO of its cloud computing arm, emphasized that Huawei's artificial intelligence algorithms significantly bolster vehicle perception and cloud-based coordination. This progress illustrates a vital shift from 'human-controlled' to 'smart-controlled' mining operations, underscoring China's prowess in integrating 5G, cloud computing, AI, and renewable energy technologies.
At the heart of this innovation is the deployment of a robust 5G-A network at the Yimin Mine, recognized as a first in the realm of open-pit mining. This state-of-the-art infrastructure provides uplink speeds of 500 megabits per second and boasts an ultra-low latency of 20 milliseconds, which is crucial for facilitating real-time high-definition video transmission and efficient cloud dispatching.
Looking ahead, plans are set to expand operations to include over 300 unmanned trucks, aimed at achieving round-the-clock production. This strategic scaling will not only bolster safety protocols but will also significantly enhance overall operational efficiency within the mining sector.
