Google Teams Up with Chinese Startup for Smart Glasses Relaunch

In a significant move towards revitalizing its presence in the smart glasses market, Google has announced a strategic partnership with Chinese startup XREAL. This collaboration aims to launch Project Aura, an innovative AI-integrated smart glasses designed specifically for enhancing the augmented reality (AR) experience on the Android XR platform.
The endeavor was first unveiled during the Google I/O 2025 event and was further detailed at the Augmented World Expo 2025 in California. Project Aura is characterized as an optical see-through extended reality (XR) device, making it the second official hardware to support the Android XR platform, following Samsung's Project Moohan mixed-reality headset.
At the heart of these smart glasses lies the advanced X1S silicon chip, conceived by XREAL and tailored for optimized XR functionality. As remarked by XREAL co-founder Wu Kejian, the invention entails the development of hardware application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that facilitate the integration and processing of sensor data crucial for augmented reality.
The integration capability signifies the collection, processing, and amalgamation of information from the natural world with digital content, effectively narrowing the divide between virtual and physical environments to create a seamless augmented reality experience. This feature is embedded within the X1S chip in the stylish sunglasses-like design, which works alongside a compact tethered computing device.
This external computing unit, powered by a yet-to-be-disclosed Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, alleviates the weight carried by the smart glasses by handling the intensive computational demands traditionally managed by bulkier AR headsets. Moreover, Project Aura will leverage Google's Gemini AI to enhance spatial computing functionality for a more intuitive user experience.
Highlighting the collaborative spirit of this project, Wu emphasized that this partnership between tech giants and agile startups represents the future of augmented reality development. He further noted that no single company has the capacity to develop the multifaceted components of AR glasses, a task requiring extensive collaboration across the technology landscape.
The selection of XREAL as Google's partner reiterates the tech giant's commitment to progressing the AR ecosystem, driven by a unified vision of innovation. With XREAL's track record as the leading AR glasses manufacturer, having shipped over 600,000 units consecutively for three years, this partnership is poised to contribute significantly to the smart glasses market.
One notable factor fueling the collaboration is the robust supply chain in China, which has demonstrated resilience in meeting production demands. Wu noted that the advancements in manufacturing capabilities honed through the smartphone industry have seamlessly transitioned into the smart glasses sector, facilitating the delivery of high-quality components and products.
Responding to the pressing need for enhanced supply chain coordination, XREAL has formed an industry alliance with leading suppliers to establish uniform technical standards. Zheng Qiang from Longcheer stated that this initiative aims to create a cohesive industry chain to support growth and foster development of Chinese AR brands.
Looking ahead, the prospects for smart glasses hinge on the continued expansion of AI technologies. Both Wu and Longcheer's Zheng believe that if smart glasses can achieve the sleek form factor of regular eyeglasses, they will likely become commonplace, gradually replacing traditional optical devices. With rapid advances in AR and AI capabilities, the future of smart glasses appears promising.
As the market evolves, XREAL and its partners remain optimistic about innovation driving the sector, with plans to develop advanced smart glasses with potential breakthroughs expected by 2027.
