China Launches First Smart Offshore Aquaculture Vessel

China has unveiled the Suhai-1, marking the launch of the world's first self-propelled enclosed salmon aquaculture vessel. This innovative vessel, inaugurated in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, is set to revolutionize salmon production while enhancing sustainability in aquaculture.

Named Suhai-1, this cutting-edge vessel functions as both a mobile offshore fish farm and a modern fish processing plant. It boasts integrated systems for breeding, harvesting, and onboard processing of high-value fish species, streamlining operations to boost efficiency and output.

The Suhai-1 has an impressive displacement of 132,000 tonnes, comparable to two medium-sized aircraft carriers. It features 15 aquaculture cabins with a combined water volume of 83,000 cubic meters, an amount equivalent to 33 standard international swimming pools, providing ample space for fish cultivation.

Equipped with a sophisticated centralized automated feeding system, Suhai-1 facilitates comprehensive management of feed storage, transportation, hoisting, unpacking, conveying, and distribution, all driven by intelligent feeding decisions designed to optimize fish growth.

In contrast to traditional stationary net-cage aquaculture, Suhai-1 can operate while cruising at speeds up to 18 kilometers per hour. This mobility enables the vessel to quickly relocate to safer waters in adverse weather conditions such as typhoons and harmful red tides, greatly enhancing both safety and operational stability.

As deep-sea salmon thrive in colder waters, Suhai-1 is poised to navigate towards cold-water masses in the Yellow Sea once operations commence. This strategy ensures that the salmon remain within their optimal growth temperature range of 10 to 18 degrees Celsius, effectively allowing the vessel to follow the fish to the best environments.

China has seen a rapid expansion in its salmon market, becoming the fastest-growing consumer market globally in 2023. By 2024, the market size reached 12.6 billion RMB, approximately 1.76 billion USD, signifying a 21 percent increase year-on-year, according to data from China Media Group.

With projections indicating the market size could surpass 260,000 tonnes by 2030, the demographic trend shows that consumers born after the 1990s and 2000s represent the core of this growth. However, domestic salmon production currently meets less than half of this burgeoning demand, clocking in at under 50,000 tonnes.

Suhai-1 is expected to significantly enhance production capacity, providing a more stable supply of salmon and helping mitigate risks associated with market price fluctuations. The shipowner company has announced plans for Suhai-1 to venture into the Yellow Sea this autumn and winter to release salmon fry for cultivation.

The initial batch of salmon produced from the Suhai-1 is anticipated to be ready for market sale by next year's Dragon Boat Festival, signaling a new chapter in China's aquaculture development and a potential shift in the country's approach to meeting growing consumer demands.
